Welcome to the Rhodes Re-development web site.

The Minister for Planning and urban Affairs has approved a plan to put 6,000 residents, 1500 employees and about 20,000 shoppers a day onto one of the most contaminated urban sites in Australia, former chemical and paint plants and land contaminated with waste from those industries. See the Contamination and Sites pages for more details.

Local residents believe that the plans are a disaster for existing residents and visitors to Liberty Grove, Concord West  and Rhodes and to all who drive on Church Street or Devlin Streets Ryde or Concord Road or Homebush Bay Drive and to local community shops. See the Traffic page for more details.

The main issues are dioxin and heavy metal contamination of the land and adjoining waterways, sewerage pollution in Homebush Bay, traffic, rail services and the effects on local businesses (often owned by local residents) from the proposed shopping centre, not to mention the provision of adequate community services (schools, aged care, disabled access, libraries, preschools) active recreation areas for children and teenagers and open space. There are also issues regarding height, light, views, and overshadowing. See the Overdevelopment page for more details

There has never been an occupiable building on any of the sites of more than 4 stories, yet the gazetted plan allows for heights of up to 10 stories.
