OPPOSITION SUPPORTS CALL FOR RHODES DEVELOPMENT MORATORIUM

23 August 2001

Shadow Minister for Urban Affairs and Planning, John Brogden, joined with
local residents to call on the State Government to put a halt to development
at the Rhodes Peninsula.

Mr Brogden called on Planning Minister Andrew Refshauge to place a
moratorium on development until an independent review of the decontamination
procedures has taken place.

"The Rhodes Peninsula is one of the most polluted sites in Australia. The
local community has every right to be concerned about the decontamination
process", John Brogden said today.

"The State Government must bring in an independent expert to review the
decontamination procedures.

"Until an independent review of the decontamination process is complete, all
development on the site most stop.

Mr Brogden met with Paul Hanly and other local residents, Burwood Mayor Cr
Joe Tannous and Canada Bay Councillors Carmel Del Duca and Megan Lavender,
last week to discuss their concerns.

"I visited the Rhodes Peninsula development site and have met with local
community representatives on a few occasions. I support their concerns about
the decontamination process and other issues such as increased traffic
volumes," John Brogden said today.

"This community has been abandoned by Labor MP John Murray. He is silent on
the issue of a development moratorium at Rhodes.

"John Murray has failed the people of Rhodes on this development * but the
Opposition supports them and their concerns, and will continue to assist
them."
